  6. Approval of Minutes: The meeting was called to order at 2:20 PM. Mool Mantar was recited to open the meeting.
  7. Kirpan Education Bill AB 504 - A proposed law to mandate kirpan education for California's peace law enforcement officers was introduced by Assembly Member Warren Furutani (D-Long Beach) in the California State Legislature this week. Since November 2008, the Sikh Coalition has been working alongside state lawmakers and law enforcement representatives to draft this legislation. Individuals are encouraged to contact their respective assembly members and ask them to pass this bill. It was decided that SCCC will send a letter to our local assembly members. We will ask that this be discussed on the Punjab News and Views radio program and also the TV program.
  8. Multifaith Exchange – The last meeting was on the Ba’hai faith. The Sikh community was represented by Iqbal Singh.
  9. Punjabi Language Promotion - It was reported that Central Unified School Board has already given their approval for starting a Punjabi class. They wrote a letter to this effect in 2003. The next step would be to find a suitable teacher. Punjabi Language Promotion committee members should contact School Board members to explore avenues to achieve this.
  10. United Sikhs Right to Turban case in France - The video documentary has been shown at some of the Gurdwaras. Gurdwara Sahib Nanak Sar, Cherry Ave reports that they have collected $1100 for this endeavor. The others are encouraged to collect $1000 each to help defray the $150,000 debt that United Sikhs has incurred.
  11. Kaurs United - Baljinder Kaur and Hardeep Kaur gave a presentation about this organization, its charitable activities, and its women’s camp to be held in Sacramento on Aug 10th to 15th. Financial assistance is needed to defray the cost of this camp. More information is available at
  12. Youth Committee - Manvinder Singh Reported the following activities:
    1. Youth Kirtan continues to be held monthly at Gurdwara Sahib Kalgi Dhar. The last one was last night Feb. 27th.
    2. A 2 day Gatka Camp was held at Guru Nanak Prakash Gurdwara, Tracy in Dec. ‘08. Gatka masters from California Gatka Dal taught the camp.
    3. A Sikh Youth Workshop was held in Livingston on Jan. 11, ‘09. It was an open group discussion and was well attended.
    4. Adjourn: The meeting was adjourned at 3:25 PM on a motion made by Gurdev Singh and seconded by Jasdeep Singh. The next meeting will be on Mar. 28, 2009, 2:00 PM at Gurdwara Singh Sabha on Dakota Ave. in Fresno.
